Highlands Cashiers Players read humorous and poignant stories. Betty Morris and Suman Fischer from the Cashiers United Methodist Church gathered together singers known as the Cashiers’ Angels to add Christmas music interspersed with the readings. Bryan Heller, the church's pianist, accompanied them.

Steve Johannessen In Concert

Nationally-recognized jazz musician and vocalist Steve Johannessen performed a free concert of his original compositions at the Albert Carlton-Cashiers Community Library. He presented his extensive knowledge of synthesized music and equipment. His performance recalled the powerful vocal stylings of Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett and the nuance that's at the core of Nat King Cole's greatest songs. Donations given at the concert benefited the Friends of the Library.

A Family Story: Sunburst Trout Farm

Wes Eason, Director of Sales for Sunburst Trout Farm, gave a talk about his family's business, sustainable farming. He closed the program by serving the audience a sampling of its products, including smoked rainbow trout filet and trout caviar. Sunburst Trout Farms is an artisanal, third generation company located in Haywood County, North Carolina.

HCP treated the Cashiers Community to 7 short comedies at the library. The funny and sometimes poignant plays were stage-read by first time and veteran actors from the Plateau. Raptor Program

"Raptor" is a catchall term used to refer to agile and powerful avian hunters such as eagles, hawks, falcons, kites and owls. A Raptor expert will bring a group of these birds of prey from Balsam Mountain Trust for the presentation. The birds kept at Balsam Mountain Trust can no longer hunt effectively and therefore cannot live in the wild. The Trust rehabilitates them and uses them for educational programs.

Barbara Oehlbeck Exhibit Dedication

Mary Palmer Dargan of Dovecote Porch & Gardens shared secrets about those hard to reach mountain places and what to do with them. After the lecture Ms. Dargan invited the audience back to Dovecote Porch & Gardens from 5:30-7:30 to meet father and son sculptors, Carl and Ethan Perverall and see their Contemporary Stonehenge sculptures.
Hugh and Mary Palmer Dargan are landscape architects based in Cashiers who have been called the Sonny and Cher of Landscape Gardening. They have been designing beautiful home environments for 43 years.

On the second weekend of December, the citizens of Cashiers, NC join together to celebrate the joy of the holidays with a big parade down main street. I 2015, the Friends and Wendy's partnered to bring books to children and teens, and fun for all. The Friends of the Library won the 2013 Most Holiday Spirit award in the parade with the Wizard of Oz theme.

Valentine's Day is welcomed in Cashiers with the Friends of the Library's Chocolate Cook-off. Every February, the library is filled with sweets and goodies baked with love from all around the community and brought in for judging for taste, aroma, and decoration. Other members come from miles around to pay to sample each product and take a bit home with them. |

Poetry Night is a tribute to the Favorite Poem Project that was started by the 39th Poet Laureate Robert Pinsky. People of Cashiers, NC are encouraged to submit their favorite poems to the library and then on one special night in August, the community comes together for a special reading of some of the poems. |

Albert Carlton-Cashiers Community Library Celebrates 20th Anniversary
Organized by the Friends of the Library, the party was staged upon the green pasture behind the library. Evocative of a county fair from simpler times, it boasted games for kids and grown-ups, hot dogs and sweets, an ice cream sandwich eating contest, our beloved reading dog Miss Pilar, the Reading rover, face painting and live music.

Under the leadership of past Friends of the Library Board President Marilyn Staats, the Cashiers Fourth Annual Poetry Night on August 14 was another great success. Twenty-two area residents read their favorite poems to a receptive audience. Readers ranged in age from 11 to 84. |
