Charlene Homolka Receives Friend of the Year Award
Friends of North Carolina Public Libraries has recognized Charlene Homolka as a Friend of the Year for 2023. Ms. Homolka has been a volunteer for the Friends of the Albert Carlton- Cashiers Community Library Friends since 2015. She manages the used bookstore at the Cashiers Library, as well as the twice yearly book clearances. All proceeds benefit the Library. Earlier in her life, she ran a small bookstore, so volunteering in the local used bookstore was a great fit for her.
She was nominated for this award by the Friends of the Library. Julie Flick, who serves on the Friends’ Board of Directors, said in nominating Ms. Homolka:
Charlene is completely devoted to our used bookstore and you can find her
there most afternoons. She has an uncanny ability to know which books will sell to our customers and which books we should try to sell to a used book dealer. Her first concern is always having great books for young and old that come into our library. As soon as someone comes in to look for a book or DVD she immediately talks to them to see if they need help finding a particular book or author. I have been in the Bookstore many times when someone has come in with nothing particular in mind and she has helped them find a great book to take home. She often suggests an author that the customer had not even heard of .
One of her greatest gifts is that she manages our twice a year Clearance sale
of our overflow books. She lines up help with the tables, puts ads in our local paper (at her own expense) and is there daily for almost a week to supervise the
Clearance. At the Clearance she loves taking customers to the bookstore in the back of the library to make other suggestions to them as to a great book to read.
During the 2 years of Covid she never abandoned the Bookstore. She would
encourage other volunteers to stay home and stay well but she was always there by herself to keep things moving along. Without her stepping up we would have had to temporarily close down the bookstore.
Our Friends group would never be able to be as successful without the
countless hours she works on a weekly basis and her immense knowledge of books in general.
Friend of the Year is awarded to a member of a Friends group who made an outstanding contribution to the Friends of the Library in the past calendar year.

THE BOOKSTORE EXPANDS 2015
The Friends of the Albert Carlton Cashiers Community Library celebrated the official opening of the expanded Bookstore on December 4, 2015. The expansion added 500 square feet, enabling the store to sell more books and have more storage room.
Support from the Jackson County Board of Commissioners and the Albert Carlton Library Foundation made this expansion possible. THANKS! |
