CATHERINE MADDOCK
I have resided in the Cashier’s area for 26 years and have been a frequent vacationer since 1969. My love for the library’s offerings made me a regular patron since 1996. I joined the Friends of the Library board in 2017, and during that time I served on multiple committees that allowed me to become familiar with the wide variety of services the library offers to our community. I was recently elected president by the FOL board.
Prior to retiring to Cashiers, I worked in the corporate world. Much of my career has been in the health care and hospital sectors working as a hospital negotiator, a provider of durable medical equipment, and VP of a medical supply organization and software company.
While I had always been a lifelong reader, I took the skill for granted until one of my children was diagnosed with dyslexia. I became especially interested in specialized schools, therapists, and local programs. I learned that hearing someone else read could spark an interest in reading by bypassing the battle to decode the written text. This set me on the path to library patronage and volunteering. My dyslexic child is now the president of a multinational corporation. I am convinced that the library reading programs combined with the other interventions transformed a frustrated child into a successful adult. Seeing the change within my own child impressed upon me the need for all children to have access to library programs and quality learning events.
My firsthand experiences on the transformative powers of learning and strong background in corporate leadership are now my goal to bring to the Friends of the Albert Carlton library.
I plan to build upon the successful work of the past president and board members by expanding our community favorite programs that include:
In addition, I look forward to the FOL financially assisting the library in introducing new and progressive programs including:
· Toddler and pre-K reading and development programs
· Astrology events and lending telescopes
· Adult crafter/maker events with lending sewing machines and other materials
· Tech talks on digital readers with lending materials
· Concert series
· Author talks and book signings
My goal is continue to make the library a dynamic and community directed resource that serves all of Cashier’s. I want to emphasize that the library isn’t just for books anymore, and that it is evolving to serve the needs of young families, working adults, empty-nesters, and retired citizens. A key to this is community involvement and financial support. I encourage you to stop by and look around, go to the website to learn about upcoming programs at:

Our future is limitless and depends on all of us working together,
